Enclosure in Hatherne was carried out by Act of Parliament. The following extract from the House of Lords records of 1776 (Volume XXXV) was only the start of the process. The final award was recorded in the House of Lords records in 1776 (volume XXXV).

A message was brought from the House of Commons . . .with a Bill, intituled “An Act for dividing and enclosing the Open Fields, Meadows, Pastures, Commons or Waste Grounds, within the Lordship or Liberty and Parish of Hatherne, in the County of Leicester ;” to which they define the Concurrence of this House

More of the parliamentary extracts include a refernce that  the owners of 93 acres refused to sign the Act.

The original  award (damaged and virtually indecipherable) and map are held in the Wigston Records Office (ref. EN/A/138/1). Fortunately there is also a full typed transcript. Copies of the map and transcript are in the possession of the Hathern History Society and they have been used to produce the following documents :-

(i) The map. This has been lovingly recreated. It contains the exact location of all plots described in the Award. It is also the first map showing the houses and buildings of "The town of Hatherne. A few are still here. You can also see the before and after maps of the village and parishFurther work is being carried out to identify the location of fields prior to enclosure, and the origin of Hathern's farms. It will be interesting also to draw a comparison with the Parish Rates Evaluation  of 1824 which was recently discovered in Wigston Records Office.

(ii) The award in its entirety. For ease of reading contents and headings have been added. This describes the scope of the award and the procedure to be followed. It describes in detail the nature, position and size of the 134 lands allotted. It is an invaluable guide to the key players of the time and gives us a picture of the fields before enclosure.

(iii) A summary of the Award (see below). This shows the allotments of land made to various people and organsisations by the Parliamentary Act of Enclosure for Hatherne in 1778. It is a summary of the key points and is based on the 'award in its entirety' and 'the map' which can both be seen on the hathernhistory website. The Plot column lists the 134 plots mentioned in the Award and is shown on the map. The Area is in acres, roods (4 to an acre) and perches (40 to a rood). The 'Land allotted'  column indicates the old name of the field or fields on which the plot now resides. Where relevant it also list any references to ancient lands and enclosures and other old features within or next to the plot. The 'Received in lieu' column states the reason why the people or organisation is receiving the named plot (or several named plots).  In most cases this is because of previously obtained common or freehold rights to so many acres (not necessarily in the same place each year) within the open field system. Further reasons might be compensation for land exchanged with someone else, or in the case of the Church, compensation for loss of tithes and other rectorial fees. Information not shown here, but in the full award, are the responsibilities for making and maintaining the fences on each side of the plot and for cleansing a nearby stream. The Page shown refers to the "award in its entirety" on the website.
