In July 1997 Alan Forsdick produced a dissertation for Nottingham University which was an examination of rural life in Hathern from 1800 to 1850. The aim was to test a hypothesis put forward by Lucy Phillips (daughter of the Reverend E.T. March Phillips) that Hathern was very different to the average rural village.
