Hathern brickyard in WW1
Today there is an abandoned air to a small industrial estate in Hathern near Loughborough. But during World War One, the Hathern Brick and Terracotta Company which was based here was the hub of a very special contribution to the war effort. The company learnt new techniques to make special acid resistant materials to store explosives. This not only helped the British government, but ensured the company’s survival. Hereyou can find a link to a BBC interview with manager Mr.Hollis. The brickyard or terracotta company employed many people from Hathern, including Yarker Hunt whose interview can be heard in another article on this site.
