Dr A.M. Bagley, now a member of the Hathern History Society, is the author of "A Guide to the Parish Church of SS. Peter and Paul". As Andree states in her introduction "Although there are finer and grander churches to be seen in Leicestershire, none is more cherished than ours".  The history and structure of the church is described in detail including the bequests and memorials which can be found on the walls. Amongst the priest's described in this book are Hugh Ducket (tutor to Lady Jane Grey), Andrew Glen (famous collector of botanical specimens), Edward Phillipps (who devoted 51 years to the spiritual and bodily needs of his parishioners). The book gives some background to the "Wicked Hathern" legend.

Other info from the Gentleman's magazine describes death of Rev Wm. Middleton aged 74 at Loughborough in April1800 - curate at Hathern for 15 years and rector for nearly 35 years. He got a B.A. at Emmanuel College Cambridge in 1747. The same publication in March 1817 recorded the death of his wife.
